Thank You to Pebble Project Colloquium Host, Vancouver Island Health Authority!

May 31, 2011

The Spring 2011 Pebble Project Colloquium was held from May 2-4 in Victoria, BC Canada. Hosted by Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), this was the first Pebble Project Colloquium held outside of the United States. Approximately 80 participants among 14 Pebble Projects attended this event.

One of the primary goals of this semi-annual event is for members of the Pebble Project to report on the status of their research endeavors. Six presentations were given this Spring, by:

• Princeton Healthcare System

• Parkland Hospital

• Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

• Provincial Health Services Authority

• Alberta Infrastructure

• UK Healthcare System

Additionally, we learned about the various challenges and successes during construction of Vancouver Island Health Authority’s new Royal Jubilee Hospital Patient Care Centre. During our tour of the new facility, attendees saw many of the innovative interventions implemented in this facility. Highlights included:

• Celling mounted lifts in every patient room

• Outdoor spaces and access to nature

• 80% single bed rooms

• Energy saving green roofs

• Decentralized nursing stations

• LEEN gold certification

• Elder friendly design

• State of the art “Smart beds”
